HOW TO AVOID BEING ROBBED - 5 USEFUL TIPS

There are times when, no matter how much you try to avoid a dangerous place of situation, you will ultimately still find yourself in one. Robbery is a violent crime where a criminal, or group of them, are prepared to use force to get your property. With the rise of incidences of people becoming addicted to new and highly addictive types of drugs, there is more motivation for a determined robber now than ever before.
The single most important thing in avoiding becoming a victim of robbery yourself is to develop a mindset which is set by two guiding principles: awareness and avoidance.
Try going around for the next few days, thinking like a would-be robber. Try to look for all of the easy potential victims out there, who walk around as if in their own little world, totally detached from the living world around them. If a robber came upon them immediately and forcefully, it is likely that the surprise alone would overwhelm their nervous system. By the time they realize what is happening, it is too late. Simply put, the time to be ready for what is happening, is before it happens.
Some Useful Tips To Avoid Being a Victim of Robbery

The following is a list of useful tips which can provide you with an idea of just how comprehensive a list of things to be aware of one needs to create a mindset of awareness and avoidance:

  1. If I see a bunch of suspicious persons, should I walk past them? In most cases, this is exactly what you should avoid. Most of the individuals today charged with robberies, are typically motivated mainly by drugs. Think that only having twenty dollars in your pocket wouldn’t interest them? Think again, it could get them high for a day, and hurting you likely means nothing to them. The worst possible situation anyone can find themselves in is to be surrounded by a gang of young(er), more physically capable desperate people. Even a bunch of youths as young as 13 gathered around you can be a potentially lethal situation. If they get you on the ground it likely will be.The best thing to do is to use a long range, side-to-side, scanning eye motion sweeping the street for any potential danger, and develop this as a habit. If you see a gathering of young people who look intimidating (ie., wearing gang apparel, etc.), move in the other direction.
  2. What if a bunch of suspicious persons are following me? If you are being followed, the best thing is to do the obvious — move to a location where there are people. If you have a cell phone, use it to call police. If you can get to a shop or a business, do it, as these places have security cameras which can be a deterrent. If you for some reason do not call the police, call some friends to come and pick you up, or call a cab to high tail it out of there. If you go from being followed to being chased, then start yelling at the top of your lungs: FIRE! FIRE! FIRE! Most people will likely pay more attention to that than to cries for help.
  3. What if someone is getting too close, and they don’t look too friendly? Never allow anyone within an arms reach of you. There is no lawful reason for them to be there, and, if they approach you too fast, they are bringing the likelihood of reasonable force being used to stop them, on themselves. The law does give you the right to use reasonable force to protect your physical safety, and if you believe that you are in immediate, clear and present jeopardy, then force can be justifiable.
  4. Should I avoid certain areas? Absolutely. If you must go to a crime ridden neighborhood on business, go with someone else, take a cell phone with you, and tell others where you are going and when you will be back. There are areas in any city that are best left alone. In general, avoid dark, poorly lit areas, avoid parking your car in the furthest away parking spots from other cars. Always stick to where there are lights, noise, people, and open businesses.
  5. Someone asks me for the time, or some change… A common ploy of the mugger is distraction. Often they will work in pairs, with one asking the mark for the time, and then another approaches them from the blindside. The best advice is to train yourself to coldly look away and be aware of what and who is immediately around you. IF they try to start a verbal confrontation with you, avoid this too, as quite often they will just use conversation or arguments to try to size you up. It goes without saying too that it is best to avoid panhandlers, although most people do this instinctively enough.

HOW TO AVOID BECOMING RAPE VICTIM

How to Avoid Becoming a Rape Victimthumbnail
Avoid Becoming a Rape Victim

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a woman is raped in the United States every 2 seconds. Take extra care to keep yourself safe.

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Be aware of your surroundings. Notice if someone is following you. If so, cross the street and walk quickly. Make as much noise as you can to attract the attention of passersby.

2. Park in well-lit areas at night
.

3. Hold your keys in your hand when you walk to your car or to your front door. This is so you can get inside right away, and also so you can use the sharp edges as a weapon if necessary.

4. Ask your ride to wait and see that you get safely inside before taking off.

5. Don't let strangers into your home, even if the reason seems legitimate, such as someone who says he has a flat tire and needs to use the phone.

6. Remember that many rapes are committed by someone the victim knows.

7. Trust your instincts. If you feel uneasy, remove yourself from the situation right away.

8.Go out with friends whenever possible, rather than alone.

9. Don't leave a drink unattended. There have been cases in which men slip a drug such as GHB or Rohypnol into a woman's drink. These drugs will knock you out, making you an easy target.

10. Look for a nearby building and run in and pull the fire alarm to cause a commotion if you feel you are in danger.

11. Carry a whistle with you to scare potential attackers away. There are also other self-defense items you can keep in your bag in case of attack.

Tips & Warnings

  • In general, women who fight their attackers have a better chance of getting away.
  • Always be sure your assailant isn't armed before you decide how to react.

MURDER OF JUNKO FURUTA - 44 DAYS OF TORTURE

Among the most gruesome murder for the past decade, I believed that the following story of Junko Furuta (taken from Wikipedia) can be considered as the most heart-breaking and most cruel.

"Concrete-encased High School Girl Murder Case" (女子高生コンクリート詰め殺人事件, Joshikōsei konkurīto-zume satsujin-jiken) was a 1988–89 murder in which a Japanese girl, 17-year-old Junko Furuta (古田 順子 Furuta Junko), was murdered.

CRIME
On November 25, 1988, four boys, including a 17-year-old whose personal name was Jō and would be later given the surname Kamisaku, abducted and held Furuta, a third-year high school (12th grade) student from Misato, Saitama Prefecture, for 44 days. They kept her captive in the house owned by the parents of Kamisaku, in the Ayase district of Adachi, Tokyo.

To forestall a manhunt, one of them forced Furuta into calling her own parents and telling them that she had run away from home, but was with "a friend" and was not in danger. He also browbeat her into posing as the girlfriend of one of the boys when his (Kamisaku's) parents were around, but when he was sure they would not call the police, he dropped the pretext. Furuta tried to escape several times, begging the parents to help her, but they did nothing, apparently out of fear that a second boy would hurt them. This second boy was at the time a low-level Yakuza leader and had bragged that he could use his connections to kill anyone who interfered.

According to their statements at their trial, the four of them raped her (over 400 times), beat her with metal rods and golf clubs, introduced foreign objects including a hot light bulb into her vagina, made her eat cockroaches and drink her own urine, inserted fireworks into her anus and set them off, forced Furuta to masturbate, cut her nipple with pliers, dropped dumbbells onto her stomach, and burned her with cigarettes and lighters. One of the burnings was punishment for attempting to call the police. It was also stated that some time after the first acts of torture, she became unable to drink water, which would cause her to vomit whenever she attempted to do so. At one point her injuries were so severe that according to one of the boys it took more than an hour for her to crawl downstairs to use the bathroom. They also related that "possibly a hundred different people" knew that Furuta had been imprisoned there, but it is not clear if this means they visited the house at different times while she was imprisoned there, or themselves either raped or abused her. When the boys refused to let her leave, she begged them on several occasions to "kill (her) and get it over with."

On January 4, 1989, using a loss at mahjong solitaire as a pretext, the four beat her with an iron barbell, poured lighter fluid on her legs, arms, face and stomach, and set her on fire. She died later that day of shock. The four boys claimed that they were not aware of how badly injured she was, and that they believed she had been malingering.

On January 5, the killers hid her corpse in a 55-gallon drum filled with concrete; the perpetrators disposed the drum in a tract of reclaimed land in Kōtō, Tokyo.

ARREST AND PUNISHMENT
The boys were arrested and tried as adults; but, because of Japanese handling of crimes committed by juveniles, their identities were concealed by the court. However, the magazine Shūkan Bunshun reported their real names, claiming that "human rights aren't needed for brutes".

For his participation in the crime, Kamisaku served eight years in a juvenile prison before he was released, in August 1999. In July 2004, he was arrested for assaulting an acquaintance, whom he believed to be luring a girlfriend away from him, and allegedly bragged about his earlier infamy.Kamisaku was sentenced to seven years in prison for the beating.

Junko's parents were dismayed by the sentences received by their daughter's killers, and enjoined a civil suit against the parents of the boy in whose home the crimes were committed. When some of the convictions were overturned on the basis of problematic physical evidence (the semen and pubic hair recovered from the body did not match those of the boys who were arrested), the lawyer handling the civil suit decided there was no case to be made and refused to represent them further.

In July 1990 a lower court sentenced the leader to seventeen years in prison. The court sentenced one accomplice to a four- to six-year term, one accomplice to a three- to four-year term, and another accomplice to an indefinite five- to ten-year term. The leader and the first two of the three appealed their rulings. The higher court gave more severe sentences to the three appealing parties. The presiding judge, Ryūji Yanase, said that the court did so because of the nature of the crime, the effect on the victim's family, and the effects of the crime on society. The leader received a twenty-year sentence, the second highest possible sentence after life imprisonment. Of the two appealing accomplices, the one that originally got four to six years, received a five- to nine-year term. The other accomplice had his sentence upgraded to a five-to seven-year term.

THE STUPID-CRIMINAL HALL OF SHAME

We love stories of "stupid criminals". We especially love to hear about inept robbers. Every day, we are assaulted by stories of stupid people--many of whom use their stupidity for personal gain. From time to time, though, we hear of those who strive to achieve new levels of stupidity *while* also breaking the law. To these brave men and women we present the highest possible honor: entry into the "Stupid-Criminal Hall of Shame." Guilty, but mostly stupid. We are certain you will love this top 10 list – most especially item 1. If you ever decide to venture into a life of crime, let these entries be lessons to you.

10. Not Lion About Any of These

This one won a Darwin Award in 1989. Direct from Melbourne, Australia, a 24-year-old black belt in Chinese Kung Fu, on receiving his 1st degree, was pumped up by his instructor with the brilliant knowledge that he could now overpower and kill a wild animal with his bare hands. He immediately put the Lord his God to the test, as it were, by driving to the Melbourne zoo, sneaking in after dark and jumping into the lion exhibit. Not that the lions couldn’t have taken him one-on-one, but they saw no need to fight fair. All the police and zookeepers found in the morning were his hands, clenched with red fur in them. This qualifies as a crime, since it is illegal to trespass in a zoo after closing time, and besides this, the lions had to be retrained not to attack humans, as they now had a taste for human flesh.

9. Read the Signs

On 29 July 2007, two burglars thought the prime target in North Richland Hills, Texas, would be a store that sells personal home-defense security systems and accessories. In their defense, they managed to stuff over $10,000 worth of surveillance equipment, mostly security cameras and house alarms, into a couple of trash cans in only 1 minute and 15 seconds. All while being recorded by 17 security cameras of the same make and model as the ones they were stealing. There were no less than 12 warning signs across the front of the store advising criminals that, among other things, “someone besides Jesus is watching you, and neither that someone nor Jesus is going to be happy if you break the law.” There was at least one very good vantage point of their getaway car, including the license plate, which was not stolen, but registered in one of their names. The police tracked them down to one of their homes two days later, a Monday, because on Sunday, the day after their robbery, the police were hampered by too many car accidents to rush the investigation. They still pled “not guilty.”

8. Barney Fife Was a Rocket Scientist

On 17 August, 1981, Miss Terry Johnson of Chicago was woken at about 2:30 in the morning by two men wearing police uniforms, complete with badges, utility belts, handguns, cuffs and hats. Their nameplates read Tyrone Pickens and Stephen Webster, and Miss Johnson stated later that she was more bewildered than scared. She thought either that these men had stolen the uniforms, or were policemen who thought she was a thief, and were confiscating the stolen property before arresting her. She waited for them to leave, then wrote down their badge numbers, names, and the number of their police car, and found out by the end of the day that the uniforms were real, and belonged to the two men. They had used police equipment to break into her home, robbed her with their uniforms on, while on duty, and not fled the city afterward. The men pictured above are NOT the criminals named in this entry.

7. Don’t Trust Those You Rob

In February 2006, a New Zealand shoplifter named Amy Adams returned within a day to the butcher shop she had robbed, because she saw her picture on a local TV news station stating that she had won a lottery and had to appear in person to claim her prize. So she rapidly drove back to the shop, announced her name, pointed herself out in a still photo from a surveillance video, and was promptly handcuffed by undercover policemen. She still denied having broken any law, all the way through court, until the judge explained that she was guilty and had no hope of convincing anyone to the contrary. She then pled guilty, and still claimed she was innocent.

6. Wrong Move Wrong Time

In this lister’s hometown of Raleigh, NC, on 11 December 2007, someone was stabbed multiple times in an intersection, and 10 police officers responded to the scene. While they were there, in the middle of the day, Anthony William, not the stabber, decided that the traffic jam at the intersection made for some ripe vehicles to steal. He waited for a woman to get out of her car, then walked right up, jumped into it and tried to drive away. Every policeman in the world came down on top of him, one of them even banging on the car hood and shouting to get out. This officer was less than 15 feet away from him and watching him the whole time when he committed the theft. When he insisted on driving away, they all memorized his license plate and let him go, to avoid a dangerous pursuit. He was picked up in Virginia, when he tried to sell it to a used car dealer.

5. SILENCE! I kill you!

In early 1994, an Islamic terrorist organization in Jordan ordered violent reprisals against all Jordanian stores that sold either videos or liquor. This meant bombing such stores. On 1 February, Eid Saleh al-Jahaleen, 31 years old, accepted $50 in U. S. currency to plant a bomb in a Turkish movie theater, in Zarqa. He entered and discovered that the theater was showing Turkish pornography. He had never seen anything of the sort, and was immediately fascinated. He stowed his bomb under a seat in the center of the theater, as instructed, then sat down in the same seat and watched the show. 10 minutes later, the bomb blew off both his legs and his testicles. His penis was relatively unscathed, since it was safely inside his right hand. He mercifully bled to death in the aisle.

4. My Kingdom for a Blackbeard

On 1 April, 2010, Somali pirates deliberately attacked the USS Nicholas (FFG-47). These Somali pirates are primarily armed with AKMs (AK-47 upgrades), RPGs, pistols and grenades. The USS Nicholas, a guided missile frigate, is armed with 40 Harpoon anti-ship missiles, one Otobreda, 3-inch artillery rifle that fires 120 rounds per minute, 2 triple-tube torpedo launchers, 4 .50 caliber machine guns, and one 20mm computer-automated Vulcan gatling cannon that fires 4,500 rounds per minute. Assuming the pirates simply failed to notice the Nicholas’s massive armament, they might have considered the standard U. S. Navy steel-gray paint, and its 453-foot length, as somewhat different from the private yachts on which pirates prefer to prey. But, alas, it was not to be. The Somali pirates opened fire with their small arms. The sailors on board the Nicholas ran to general quarters, the Vulcan cannon shot down three of the four rocket-propelled grenades, and sailors manning one of the .50 caliber machine guns disabled the pirate skiff. The grenade that made it through the hail of cannonfire, struck a bulkhead of the frigate’s superstructure and dented it. The 3 pirates on board surrendered, and then the Nicholas sighted their mothership, an ex-shrimping schooner converted into an armed trawler of sorts. This ship simply turned and fled, but was overtaken and two more pirates were captured. The bulkhead dent was hammered out and repainted.

3. Filming Your Own Crime

Not all idiotic criminal acts are funny. The Abu Ghraib Prisoner Abuse scandal of 2004 resulted in a, nearly worldwide, condemnation of the United States (not that the United States was particularly popular before then) for “sinking to the terrorists’ level,” as it were. The primary guilty person was Specialist Charles Graner, the ringleader who incited numerous other guards to torture and humiliate prisoners, or at least look the other way. What makes these criminals acts truly idiotic is that the perpetrators filmed themselves committing them, with cell phone videos and photos. They collected the evidence that would have convicted them in any court of law on the planet. Others responsible were PFC Lynndie England, Staff Sergeant Ivan Frederick, Sergeant Javal Davis, and soldiers with ranks up to Lt. Colonel and Colonel. Iraq was, at the time, utterly anarchic, even more so than it is now, in 2010, and the guilty persons were under the impression, both that their crimes would not be noticed, and that no one would care.

2. Wrong Item to Steal

On 22 August, 1911, Vincenzo Peruggia hid in a janitor’s closet in the Louvre, in Paris, France, waited until well after the museum had closed, and then walked out with the Mona Lisa hidden under his coat. His motive was multifold. He was Italian, and so is the painting and its painter, and he wanted it returned to an Italian museum. That might have been construed as selflessly patriotic, except that he didn’t just give it to an Italian museum. He tried to sell it to one: the Uffizi Art Gallery in Florence. He also intended to make some money through a friend who would sell replicas, because with the real one out there somewhere, replica buyers would play the lottery, as it were, trying to buy the real one for cheap. The problem with all of this is that you can’t exactly resell the real Mona Lisa. The Uffizi curators somehow discovered that it must have come from the Louvre, since, after all, there’s ONLY ONE Mona Lisa and the Louvre is well known for housing it, in which case, the Louvre was not likely to have sold it to one of its part-time employees. Must be a thief in their midst. He was arrested on the spot. Nevertheless, Peruggia was hailed as a hero throughout Italy, as he had hoped, and only served 6 months in prison.

1. Wrong Person to Mug

If someone were to ask you who the last person anyone should ever dare to mug is, what name would be your answer? This lister is betting on 80% or better of respondents answering, “Chuck Norris”. Amazingly, astoundingly, two idiots managed to try just that. It happened in 1994. Norris mentions this whole thing in his autobiography, “Against All Odds.” And, by his testimony, this is what happened. Honest to God, it really happened. In 1994, right at the beginning of his run as Walker, Texas Ranger, Norris was, and still is, living in Dallas, Texas, where the show was filmed. One day he was walking down the street by himself, no entourage, no fans following him, no bodyguards, not even his wife. He turned a commercial block in the downtown skyscraper area and saw two men a little bigger than he coming straight for him from the other end of the block. They were staring right at him, and he figured they wanted autographs, which he enjoys signing. So he walked up to them and stopped with a smile, whereupon they stood in front of him, whipped out a couple of large pocketknives, and one of them demanded,
“Give me your wallet, Chuck! Give it here!”

Norris actually opened his mouth wide and then asked, “Are you insane!?”

“No! We know who you are! And we know you got a lot of money! Now give it up, or you’re dead!”
Now before we go further, let us just go over a few of the particulars. All jokes aside, Chuck Norris truly does have the following black belts:

1st degree in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, 8th Degree Grandmaster in Tae Kwon Do, 9th degree in Jeet Kune Do under Bruce Lee and Lee’s best student, Dan Inosanto, 10th degree in Shito Ryu Karate, 10th degree in Tang Soo Do, 11th degree in Chun Kuk Do.

Granted, the last art is his own concoction, a hybrid of all the best moves he has learned over the years, all blended for both self-defense and competition, and you are only allowed a 10th degree or better in anything when you found your own dojo. But suffice to say, the muggers didn’t even use guns. From a hundred feet away. They used knives within arm’s reach. What happened next was rather anti-climactic.The police arrived about 4 minutes later, 3 officers in two cars, and were greeted by the scene of two men with SEVERELY broken arms (the bones had gone through the skin) sitting on the curb, two bloody knives in the gutter, and Chuck Norris, the Almighty Himself, leaning against the wall, wearing his beard, jeans, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat….he shrugged at them. The police started laughing so hard that they bent over, holding their sides, unable to put the handcuffs on the muggers.
One of them managed to ask, “Did you not know who he was?!”

One of them said, “Yeah, we knew who he was! We figured all that crap on TV was fake!”

10 EVIL PSYCOPATHS YOU PROBABLY DON'T KNOW

In the past we have had lists of serial killers and murderous monsters (men, women and children). This list looks at murderers who are less well known but equally evil in their psychopathic lust for blood. If there are other psychopathic killers you think should be on this list, be sure to mention it in the comments so I can add them to another list in the future. This list is in no particular order and was created with the assistance of “World’s Most Evil Psychopaths” and Wikipedia.

10. Cordelia Botkin

Candy for my Sweetheart

Cordelia Botkin was the estranged wife of a prominent businessman in San Francisco in the last decade of the 19th century. She (41 years old) met John Dunning (31) when his bicycle broke down in the park. Botkin made very obvious sexual advances, and consequently Dunning (who was married to a former congressman’s daughter) entered into a torrid affair with her. He eventually left his wife and fell into a life of gambling, sex and alcoholism – all fueled (and financed) by Botkin. He eventually decided to end the affair and return to his wife, a fact of which he informed Botkin. Not wanting to be left alone, she sent a box of poisoned candy to Dunning’s wife made to look like a gift from a friend. Dunning’s wife and five friends and family members ate the chocolate. Four recovered but the wife and her sister died. The remaining chocolates were tested and found to be laced with arsenic. The trail of the candy eventually led back to Botkin, who was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. In a strange twist to the tale, the judge who sent her to jail saw her out shopping in town a few weeks later; an investigation uncovered the fact that Botkin was exchanging sexual favors in order to be allowed to leave jail whenever she wanted. She died in jail at the age of 56. Her cause of death was: “softening of the brain due to melancholy.”

9. Axeman of New Orleans (Name Unknown)

On May 23, 1918, an Italian grocer named Joseph Maggio and his wife were butchered, while sleeping in their apartment above the Maggio grocery store. Upon investigation, the police discovered that a panel in the rear door had been chiseled out, providing a way in for the killer. The murder weapon, an axe, was found in the apartment, still coated with the Maggio’s blood. Nothing in the house had been stolen, including jewelry and money that were almost in plain sight. The only clue that was discovered was a message that had been written in chalk near the victim’s home. It read: “Mrs. Joseph Maggio will sit up tonight. Just write Mrs. Toney”. Almost exactly a month after the Maggio murder came a second crime. Louis Bossumer, a grocer who lived behind his store with his mistress, Annie Harriet Lowe, was discovered by neighbors one morning, lying in a pool of blood. He was critically wounded in the attack but managed to survive. Most notoriously, on March 13, 1919, a letter purporting to be from the Axeman was published in the newspapers saying that he would kill again at 15 minutes past midnight on the night of March 19, but would spare the occupants of any place where a jazz band was playing. That night all of New Orleans's dance halls were filled to capacity, and professional and amateur bands played jazz at parties at hundreds of houses around town. There were no murders that night. The Axeman murdered a total of eight people out of twelve victims before the killings stopped. There was no evidence to link the only suspect, Joseph Mumfre, to the crimes. The crime was never solved.

8. Thomas Cream

"I am Jack…"

Cream was a doctor secretly specializing in abortions. He was born in Scotland, educated in London, active in Canada and later in Chicago, Illinois. In 1881, he was found to be responsible for fatally poisoning several of his patients of both sexes. Originally there was no suspicion of murder in these cases, but Cream himself demanded an examination of the bodies, apparently an attempt to draw attention to himself. Imprisoned in the Illinois State Penitentiary in Joliet, Illinois, he was released on 31 July, 1891, on good behavior. Moving to London, he resumed killing (mostly prostitutes) and was soon arrested. He was hanged on 15 November, 1892. According to the hangman, his last words were reported as being “I am Jack…”, interpreted to mean Jack the Ripper. He was allegedly imprisoned at the time of the Ripper murders, but some authors have suggested that he could have bribed officials and left the prison before his official release.

7. Joseph Vacher

The French Ripper

Joseph Vacher was a French serial killer, sometimes known as “The French Ripper” due to comparisons to the more famous Jack the Ripper murderer of London, England, in 1888. His scarred face, accordion and plain, white, hand-made rabbit-fur hat became his trademark appearance. In 1893, while in military conscription, he fell in love with a young maidservant, Louise, who was not at all attracted to him. When his time in the army was over, he tried to woo her and propose to her for the last time before returning home, but she was bored by him and mocked him. In a rage, he shot her four times (she was badly injured, but survived) and then tried to commit suicide. Shooting himself twice in the head accomplished nothing more than paralyzing one side of his face (one of the bullets remained forever lodged in his skull) and putting him in a mental institution in Dole, Jura for a year. Shortly after his release, at the age of 25, he began his murder spree. During a three-year period, beginning in 1894, Vacher murdered and mutilated at least 11 people (one woman, five teenage girls and five teenage boys). Many of them were shepherds watching their flocks in isolated fields. The victims were stabbed repeatedly, often disemboweled, raped and sodomized. Vacher was a drifter, traveling from town to town, from Normandy to Provence, staying mainly in the southeast of France, and surviving by begging or working on farms as a day laborer. He was caught in 1897, whilst trying to murder a woman in the fields. He confessed to the murders, but claimed he was insane because he was bitten by a rabid dog when he was a child. He later changed his story and said he was a messenger of God. Vacher was executed by guillotine two months later, at dawn on December 31, 1898. He refused to walk towards the scaffold and had to be dragged by the executioners. If you are so inclined, you can view Vacher’s post-execution head here.

6. Leonarda Cianciulli

Soap-Maker of Correggio

This entry is on the list not for the number of victims but what Cianciulli did with the bodies. Leonarda Cianciulli (November 14, 1893, Montella, Province of Avellino – October 15, 1970) was an Italian serial killer. Better known as the “Soap-Maker of Correggio”, she murdered three women in Correggio between 1939 and 1940, and turned their bodies into soap. Having been born the child of a rape, she led a sad childhood with a hateful mother. She attempted suicide twice. In 1914, she married a registry office clerk, Raffaele Pansardi, and moved to Lariano in Alta Irpinia. Their home was destroyed by an earthquake in 1930, and they moved once more, this time to Correggio, where Leonarda opened a small shop and became very popular as a nice, gentle woman, a doting mother and a nice neighbor. In 1939, Cianciulli heard that her eldest son, Giuseppe, was to join the Italian army in preparation for World War II. Giuseppe was her favorite child, and she was determined to protect him at all costs. She came to the conclusion that his safety required human sacrifices. She found her victims in three middle-aged women, all neighbors. After murdering her first victim with an axe she got rid of the body in this way (her own words):
“I threw the pieces into a pot, added seven kilos of caustic soda, which I had bought to make soap, and stirred the whole mixture until the pieces dissolved in a thick, dark mush that I poured into several buckets and emptied in a nearby septic tank. As for the blood in the basin, I waited until it had coagulated, dried it in the oven, ground it and mixed it with flour, sugar, chocolate, milk and eggs, as well as a bit of margarine, kneading all the ingredients together. I made lots of crunchy tea cakes and served them to the ladies who came to visit, though Giuseppe and I also ate them.”

Cianciulli’s second victim was killed in exactly the same manner. Her final victim, opera singer Virginia Cacioppo was killed in the same way but with one twist:
“She ended up in the pot, like the other two…her flesh was fat and white, when it had melted I added a bottle of cologne, and after a long time on the boil I was able to make some most acceptable creamy soap. I gave bars to neighbors and acquaintances. The cakes, too, were better: that woman was really sweet.”

Cianciulli was caught due to an eyewitness and found guilty of murder. She was sentenced to thirty years in jail where she died of a brain hemorrhage. More information (including an image of the tools she used) can be found here.

5. Henri Landru

Sketched Confession

Landru was a French serial killer, and real-life “Bluebeard”. Born in Paris, he left school and joined the French army. When he was discharged he had a child with his cousin and then married another woman, having four children by her, prior to leaving her. He was swindled out of money by his employer and turned to fraud himself, for an income. Landru began to put advertisements in the lonely hearts sections in Paris newspapers, usually along the lines of “Widower with two children, aged 43, with comfortable income, serious and moving in good society, desires to meet widow with a view to matrimony.” With World War I underway, many men were being killed in the trenches, leaving plenty of widows upon whom Landru could prey. When women would come to his home Landru would kill them, disembowel them and burn their body parts in his oven. His aliases were so numerous that he had to keep a ledger listing all the women with whom he corresponded, and which particular identity he used for each woman. He was eventually caught, thanks to the efforts of the sister of one of his victims, and was found guilty on the evidence of his ledger books, alone (no body parts were recovered). He was guillotined 3 months later, in 1922. During his trial Landru traced a picture of his kitchen, including in it the stove in which he was accused of burning his victims. He gave this drawing to one of his lawyers. In December 1967, the drawing was made public, written in pencil on the back Landru had written “It is not the wall behind which a thing takes place, but indeed the stove in which a thing has been burned”. This has been interpreted as Landru’s confession to his crimes

4. Servant Girl Annihilator

Jack’s Trial Run?

The Servant Girl Annihilator, or Austin Axe Murderer, was a serial killer or killers who terrorized Austin, Texas, between 1884 and 1885. It is thought that at least seven women, mostly servant girls, died at the hands of the killer, who typically dragged his victims from their beds and raped them before slashing or axing them to death. Several victims were stabbed by some sort of spike in the ears or the face. His first victim was Mollie Smith, on New Year’s Eve, 1884. Many people were arrested for the crimes, but none were convicted. The last killings were a year after the first, ending with the murder of two wealthy white women, Eula Phillips and Sue Hancock, in central Austin, on December 24, 1885. The crimes represented an early example of a serial killer in the United States, three years before the Jack the Ripper murders in London. Some have even attempted to prove that the Annihilator and Jack the Ripper were one and the same. You can read more about this killing spree here.

3. Harpe Brothers

First American Serial Killers?

Micajah “Big” Harpe (1768? – August 1799) and Wiley “Little” Harpe (c1770? – January 1804) were outlaws who operated in Tennessee, Kentucky and Illinois, in the late 18th century. Their crimes appear to have been motivated more by blood lust than financial gain, and some historians have called them the nation’s first true “serial killers”. As young men, the Harpes lived with renegade Creek and Cherokee Indians, who committed atrocities against both white settlers and against their own tribes. By 1797, the Harpes were living near Knoxville, Tennessee. However, they were driven from the town after being charged with stealing hogs and horses. They were also accused of murdering a man named Johnson, whose body was found in a river, ripped open and weighted with stones. This became a characteristic of the Harpe’s murders. They butchered anyone under the slightest provocation, even babies. R.E. Banta, in The Ohio, claims that Micajah Harpe even bashed his infant daughter’s head against a tree because her constant crying annoyed him. This was the only crime he would later confess genuine remorse for. In July, 1799, John Leiper raised a posse to avenge the murder of one of their victims (Mrs. Segal). Leiper reached Harpe first, and managed to shoot him. He decapitated Harpe and stuck his head on a pole, at the location still known as “Harpe’s Head” in Kentucky. Little Harpe escaped but was eventually caught and executed, by hanging. Wyatt Earpe is a descendent of the Harpes (most of whom changed their name to avoid being scorned by their communities).

2. Earle Nelson

The Gorilla Killer

Earle Leonard Nelson, aka The Gorilla Killer (May 12, 1897 – January 13, 1928), was an American serial killer. Around the age of 10, Nelson collided with a streetcar while riding his bicycle and remained unconscious for six days, following the accident. After he awoke, his behavior became erratic and he suffered from frequent headaches and memory loss. He began his criminal behavior early, and he was sentenced to two years in San Quentin State Prison, in 1915, after breaking into a cabin he believed to be abandoned. He later spent time in mental institutions. Nelson began engaging in sex crimes when he was 21 years old. In 1921, he attempted to molest a 12-year-old girl named Mary Summers, but he was thwarted when she screamed and brought attention to him. He was committed to a mental hospital again, but when he was released in 1925, he began his killing spree. Nelson’s victims were mostly landladies, whom he would approach on the premise of renting a room. Once he gained their trust, he would kill them, almost always by strangling them, and engage in necrophilia with their corpse. He would often hide the body, leaving the corpse under the nearest bed for days. Nelson’s ‘modus operandi’ led him to be labeled “The Gorilla Strangler”. He went on to murder more than 20 people and was finally caught and hanged, in 1928.

1. Béla Kiss

Kiss of Death

Béla Kiss (born in 1877) was an Hungarian serial killer. He is thought to have murdered at least 24 young women, and attempted to pickle them in giant metal drums that he kept on his property. He was a tinsmith who had lived in Cinkota (a town near Budapest), since 1900. He was an amateur astrologer and was fond of occult practices. Members of the community noticed that he was amassing a number of large metal drums, which he said were filled with gasoline to prepare for rationing in the First World War, which was looming. He was conscripted into the army and left the town. In July 1916, Budapest police received a call from a Cinkota landlord who had found seven large metal drums. The town constable had remembered Kiss’ stockpile of gasoline, and led needy soldiers to them. Upon attempting to open the drums, a suspicious odor was noted. Detective Chief Charles Nagy took over the investigation and opened one of the drums. There they discovered the body of a strangled woman. The other drums yielded similarly gruesome content. A search of Kiss’ house resulted in a total of 24 bodies. Kiss’ housekeeper assured police that she knew absolutely nothing about the murders, and showed them a secret room Kiss had told her never to enter. The room was filled with bookcases, but also had a desk that held a number of letters, Kiss’ correspondence with 74 women and a photo album. Many of the books were about poisons or strangulation. Kiss was found recuperating in a hospital in Serbia, but he escaped by putting a dead soldier’s body in his bed. He was never caught, but people claimed to have seen him in various places around the world, including leaving a New York subway.

20 MOST PROLIFIC SERIAL KILLERS

Genocide and mass murder have been a fact throughout history, but one thing we tend to overlook are those few who kill so many others all on their own. Serial killers, though rare, are a terrifying aberration in society; they’re predators roaming the streets along side us, picking off their prey one at a time. They often take years to get caught, and some are never apprehended at all. The flowing individuals are the 20 absolute most prolific serial killers of all time.

1. John Wayne Gacy, Jr. (March 17, 1942 – May 10, 1994)
In just six short years, John Wayne Gacy managed to rape and murder 33 boys– and that’s just the confirmed lot. At the time of his arrest, 27 of his victims’ bodies were found in the crawl-space beneath his Illinois home. Others would be found later in a nearby river. As if this weren’t frightening enough by its own merit, Gacy’s nightmarish aliases “Pogo the Clown”, and “the Killer Clown” were earned by his in fact working as a clown at children’s parties. On May 10th, 1994 he was put to death by lethal injection.

2. Theodore Robert Bundy (November 24, 1946 – January 24, 1989)
Though he himself was snuffed out of life by a Florida State electric chair in 1989, Ted Bundy’s name lives on as a disturbing reminder of the brutal killing-spree he embarked upon in 1974. Ending in 1978 with this final apprehension, Bundy’s spree had taken at least 29 lives; he confessed to over 30, but remains suspected of up to 100 murders. He didn’t simply kill his victims outright either, Bundy preferred strangulation and sometimes beat them to death. He often raped them, and his sexual preference didn’t include any taboo on whether the person was alive or dead.

3. Serhiy Tkach (1952 – Present)
A worst-case scenario for police gone bad, Tkach was a Ukranian police investigator who spent more than two decades years killing at least 29 girls, usually teens or preteens. He was apprehended in 2005 and sentenced just last year to life in prison. The body-count attached to Tkach isn’t certain, as he claims to have actually killed between 80 and 100 people. He blamed his former wives for his animosity toward women, and often raped his victims before killing them.

4. Donald Harvey (April 15, 1952 – Present)
Currently serving time in Southern Ohio, Donald Harvey used to be a hospital orderly, and called himself the “Angel of Death.” Officially, he’s credited with somewhere between 36 and 57 deaths, but he claims to have killed 87 people over a period of two decades. Harvey preferred to poison his victims, usually by way of arsenic, cyanide or even insulin, causing slow and painful deaths. He didn’t limit himself though, and often resorted to violence as well. He had suffocated victims, and even resorted to puncturing internal organs with a coat-hanger at one point.

5. Moses Sithole (November 17, 1964 – Present)
Called the “South African Strangler,” Sithole is currently serving a 2,410 year sentence for luring upwards of 38 victims to their deaths, after overpowering and raping them in seclusion. The combined punishments of over 40 rapes added to these murders may seem ridiculous, but he likely won’t even live to old age as he’s been diagnosed with AIDS since 2000. Sithole is notable for the speed in which he managed to kill so many – beginning his spree in 1994 after a previous release from prison, he was apprehended just one year later in 1995.

6. Belle Sorenson Gunness (November 11, 1859 – April 28, 1908)
Thought to have killed more than 40 people over the course of decades, Belle (born Brynhild) epitomized the term, “crazy female”. Drifting through life from one insurance payout to the next, Belle grew to over 200 lbs (at only 5′8″ tall). She had begun her life-long trail of death with her own husband and children, and continued the spree by killing the men who would be her suitors. Times must have been different back then, considering there were so many suitors left dead by this extremely stocky woman. In the end, Belle’s death was surrounded by controversy, as her body had been discovered beheaded and burned. The bodily remains of Belle Guiness remain under suspicion to this day, as there wasn’t enough DNA evidence left to get conclusive results when tested.

7. Ahmad Suradji (1951 – July 10, 2008)
An Indonesian cattle-breeder, Suradji confessed to the killings of 42 women of all ages over a period of 11 years. He didn’t just hunt them and kill them like a usual predator, but had a ritual in which he would bury his victim up to their neck and proceed to strangle them with a cable. He had three wives, and they were arrested along with him for assisting in the rituals. He claimed that his father had come to him in a dream, and had told him that he needed to kill 70 women and drink their saliva so that he might become a healer. The irony of this is slightly overwhelming, but Suradji didn’t see it that way. He was put to death by firing squad in 2008.

8. Alexander Pichushkin (April 9, 1974 – Present)
Also called the “Chessboard Killer,” Pichushkin was driven to attempt to kill as many people as there were squares on a chessboard. He claims to have fallen just short of his 64-body goal by killing 63 people, but estimates are in the range of 50. He was convicted in 2007 of 48 murders, mostly homeless men, and received a sentence of life in prison. The first 15 years are to be spent in solitary confinement. Going along with his chess-fetish, in order to avoid getting blood on his clothes he would try to use the bottle of vodka he had lured the homeless with as a bludgeon, killing them through head-trauma.

9. Gary Leon Ridgway (February 18, 1949 – Present)
“The River Man” claims to have killed more than 90 women during his 16-year spree in Washington State. He was finally convicted of 48 such murders, all of which he confessed to. His methods were gruesome and brutal: he used ropes, fishing lines, or cables to strangle the women only after he was sated by rape and torture. He didn’t stop at the victims’ deaths either, as he often indulged in necrophilia if he hadn’t had his fill. He’s been serving a life-sentence since his conviction in 2003, which would have resulted in lethal injection, had he not plea-bargained.

10. Anatoly Onoprienko (July 25, 1959 – Present)
Termed “the Terminator,” Anatoly Onoprienko confessed to murdering 52 people during a 6-year madness-driven spree. His killings formed a cross on the Ukrainian map, and he said he’d been urged by several voices in his head. When he was arrested he had a hunting rifle on his person that matched the weapon thought used in many of the killings, along with belongings of some of the victims. He was convicted and sentenced to death in 1999 but this was later commuted to a life-sentence in prison, which is now serving.

11. Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo (October 16, 1936 – February 14, 1994)

Another Ukrainian, Chikatilo racked up such impressive nicknames during his spree as the “Butcher of Rostov”, the “Red Ripper” or the “Rostov Ripper”, and killed at least 52 people between 1978 and 1990. His victims were mostly women and children. He raped or attempted to rape his female victims, and reportedly suffered from sexual impotence which only drove him to further violence. He typically killed his victims by stabbing them to death, usually during rape – which was often the only way he could achieve orgasm. In 1994 he was executed, killed by a single gunshot to the back of the head.

12. Pedro Alonso López (October 8, 1948 – Present)
López’s story is nothing short of terrifying because it’s not over yet. Living a tragic life since his early years, he grew up both as molester and molested, he was beaten, raped, and in retribution against those who raped him, he began killing at a young age as well. He began to be known as the “Monster of the Andes” as his suspected body-count grew to record numbers. He was once convicted of killing 110 girls, but by his own admission the true numbers of his life-long spree of rape and murder are likely to number several hundred. López spent 14 years in prison for his conviction, only to be released after 3 extra years in a Colombian hospital. His current whereabouts are unknown.

13. Yang Xinhai (July 1968 – February 14, 2004)
Over a period of four years, Chinese Xinhai was convicted on 67 counts of murder. Beginning his criminal career as a petty thief, he soon graduated to rape, and then finally murder. His methods included home invasion, and it was not unusual for him to kill entire families in brutal, bloody massacres using farm equipment like axes and saws. He raped pregnant women and killed children, he was dubbed the “Monster Killer” by the Chinese. He was put to death in 2004.

14. Pedro Rodrigues Filho (1954 – Present)
Dubbed “Pedrinho Matador,” Filho claims to have killed over 100 people, a great deal of whom were prisoners serving time in the same prison he had been. In 2003 he was convicted of killing 70, his own father among them, and sentenced to 128 years. By Brazilian law however, he can serve no more than 30 of those 128 years in prison.

15. Elizabeth Báthory (August 7, 1560 – August 21, 1614)
Known to History as the “Blood Countess,” Countess Báthory was accused, along with 4 accomplices, of killing over 600 women, mostly virgins, after the death of her husband at the hands of the Turks. Báthory was convicted, though never formally tried, of killing 80 such young women, and as punishment was walled into a section of the castle under house arrest. She died four years later, but stories would continue on for centuries making her out to be a counterpart to Vlad the Impaler, and painting her as bathing in the blood of virgins. She is regarded as the most prolific female serial killer the world has ever known.

16. Javed Iqbal (1956 – October 8, 2001)
Iqbal committed suicide in 2001 while in a Pakistani prison, and his body showed signs of torture upon autopsy. He had been convicted of molesting or raping, then killing 100 children, but his case has come under scrutiny since a quarter of the alleged victims were found alive after his death. Prior to his arrest, he had confessed to the killing of 100 young boys, and said that he had dismembered them after strangling them. He claimed he had disposed of their bodies using vats of acid, which were found along with photographs and belongings of victims when police searched the location mentioned. Due to this process of eliminating evidence, the true number of victims may never be known.

17. Thug Behram (ca. 1765 – 1840)
Believed to have strangled to death nearly 1000 victims in the 50 year span between 1790 and 1840, Thug is known today as the historically fabled centerpiece of the Thuggee cult of India. Largely criminal, the cult revolved around the ritualistic slayings of travelers using a ceremonial cloth to strangle them, so that their belongings could be pilfered afterwards. Thug’s legacy lives on today in movies like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.

18. Luis Alfredo Garavito Cubillos (January 25 1957 – Present)
Known as “La Bestia” or “The Beast,” Cubillos is currently serving a 22-year prison sentence in Colombia. In 1999 he confessed to the rape and murder of 140 boys, but numbers are suspected to be as high as 300. Colombian law’s maximum sentence of 30 years had been knocked down to 22 because he helped police locate bodies and other evidence. Recent developments in the country’s legal system have begun to allow for discussion of lengthening his sentence, on the grounds that they believe he has killed far more than he has already admitted.

19. Gilles de Rais (1404 – 1440)
Gilles de Rais is historically known best for two things: Fighting along side Joan of Arc at Orléans, and being a serial killer. He is credited with the deaths of up to 200 children, and in court he had explained his actions as influenced by the Occult. He was excommunicated and condemned to hanging in 1440.

20. Harold Frederick “Fred” Shipman (January 14, 1946 – January 13, 2004)
By technicality, Harold Shipman is the most prolific serial killer in known history. He has been positively linked to upwards of 250 murders, with actual numbers thought to be much higher. He killed via lethal injection and was known as “Doctor Death” for being a general practitioner and targeting his patients, most of whom were female. He was sentenced to life in prison in 2000, but hung himself in his jail cell four years later.
